BIOGRAPHY
Born 17 May 1939, Hugh Dykes was educated at Weston Super Mare Grammar School
and Pembroke College Cambridge. He is a stockbroker and financial
consultant and was previously Conservative MP for Harrow East (’70-’97), and MEP
(’74-’77). While an MP, Mr Dykes served in the Ministry of Defence and the
Cabinet Office in Edward Heath’s Government. He joined the Liberal
Democrats following the defeat of Ken Clarke in the Conservative Leadership
battle following the 1997 General Election. Mr Dykes became adviser to
Paddy Ashdown on EU affairs in 1998 and represented the Party in the London
Region in the 1999 European Parliament elections. He is an active member
of the party’s defence, foreign and European affairs team. He was appointed
member of the Party’s working group on the EU Convention in 2001. Hugh
Dykes is also Vice President of the British-German Association and Chaired the
BGA Annual Conference in 2002. Mr Dykes speaks several European languages
fluently and has been honoured with the German Federal Order of Merit, French
Legion d’Honneur, and the Luxembourg European Medal of Honour. Mr Dykes is
married with three children (one deceased) and lives in
London.
Lord Dykes is a member of the Defra team in the Lords.
Previous to this role he was a member of the foreign
affairs team.
