Published by The Conference Office, Liberal Democrats, 1 Vincent Square, London, SW1P 2PN Welcome to Conference from Ed Davey MP, Liberal Democrat Leader Welcome to Autumn Conference 2024! I am delighted we have the opportunity to gather together in Brighton so soon after the General Election. And what a General Election it was! These historic results have come about because of the amazing hard work that each and every one of you have put in, not just for the six weeks of the campaign, but in the years building up to it. Whether you were knocking on doors, delivering leaflets, phoning volunteers, running or taking part in the affiliate committees, or developing and voting on our vote-winning policies at our conferences, you have played an important role in how our party looks today. Thank you. This weekend is a chance to celebrate. And it is an exciting chance to shape the future of our party. Because the British people have spoken. And the Liberal Democrats have listened. Voters told us to put an end to the scandals, the chaos and carelessness of the Conservatives. So now we have 72 local champions sitting in Parliament with a mandate to do exactly that - many of whom you might see this weekend! This election has been an important step in bringing about the changes our country needs, from addressing the cost-of- living crisis, to fixing our broken NHS and protecting our precious natural environment. The new Government has inherited a huge mess. It is our job now, as a strong voice in Parliament, to champion our ideas for our local communities, to make change happen and deliver a fair deal. Let’s enjoy this weekend together. Have a great conference! Welcome to Conference from Mark Pack, Party President Our first Federal conference in this Parliament will be very different from the first one in the previous Parliament. Back then, in Spring 2020 we were facing the aftermath of the deep disappointment of the 2019 election and then a health crisis forced cancellation of the event. This time, we have the wonderful collective achievement of 72 MPs to celebrate and will be able to meet both in person and online to celebrate and start planning our next steps forward. From our low of 6 seats in 1959 through to our then peak of 63 in 2006, gaining 57 seats took 47 years. We have now gained 61 seats in just 5 years, and on top of that, made net gains at every round of local elections. That is an amazing team achievement, and we all should be proud of the roles we have all played in achieving that. The political landscape of this Parliament is still being created, and events no doubt will intervene. But we can be confident that the key messages we campaigned on in the general election - on the NHS and social care, on the cost of living and on the environment, particularly sewage - will continue to serve us well. The government may have changed but the pressing need to address those issues remains. This will not be my first Federal Conference in Brighton. At one of those previous ones, I was filmed by the BBC next to another Liberal Democrat, handing out leaflets. They went on to become an MP, then a Cabinet Minister, then Prime Minister, then crashed the economy and then featured on hundreds of thousands of Lib Dem leaflets. Whether you are coming in person, or joining online, and whatever political future awaits you, I hope you enjoy conference, and who knows what political future may await anyone you see… In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to grab me for any questions you have, or drop me an email on President@LibDems.org.uk. Welcome to Conference from Nick da Costa, Chair - Federal Conference Committee Dear Friends, We are so delighted to welcome you back to Brighton for our 2024 Autumn Conference. I think it would be an understatement to write that a lot has happened since our last Conference in York! We beat the Tories in third place in the May local elections, and at the General Election we have 72 MPs, returned as the third party in the House of Commons and are now the largest Liberal Democrat parliamentary group in over a century. This is a historic conference for us, and I hope many of you have the opportunity to welcome our new MPs to their first Conference. This is a great opportunity for us to celebrate our successes. The Federal Conference Committee has selected a varied agenda for our Autumn Conference, including some opportunities to reflect on our amazing electoral performance. We also have a brilliant selection of fringes and exhibitors at this Conference, and we are so grateful for all the party bodies and external organisations who engage with our party and members at our Conference. I certainly hope that you taking part in the exciting training programmes we offer at conference helped you in your campaigning up and down the country. But importantly, it’s always good to brush up skills, share knowledge and share success - so I do recommend that you take a look at the fantastic training programme that we offer at Conference. I hope you take full advantage of your time at Conference, and if you need any assistance please reach out to myself or other members of the Federal Conference Committee. Looking forward to seeing you all.
