Nigel Jones

Candidate for Newcastle-under-Lyme

General Election - 4 July 2024

Nigel Jones

Nigel is a longtime local campaigner, having been a councillor for 13 years and now an Alderman of the Borough. On the council he was Chair of General Purposes and Audit Committee helping to lead a period of structural change as a result of which the national Audit Commission said the Borough was the most improved in the country.

Nationally he was chair of the Liberal Democrat Education Association 2015 to2022, and spent working life as a teacher.

He especially commends the party's proposal for a green industrial strategy and help to small businesses, together with taxing big profits and financial dealings not ordinary income. The levelling up funds for our town centres will not be a good spend unless there is better support for jobs and families in the Borough. We need investment in housing and education (both of these boosting the economy) better social care and local public health services (to help the NHS).

Proportional voting systems and closer working with the EU are also among so much change that is vital for the long-term wellbeing of our people.
