David Chalmers

Candidate for North East Cambridgeshire

General Election - 4 July 2024

David Chalmers

David Chalmers is the Liberal Democrat Candidate for North East Cambridgeshire.

Before entering politics David had a successful international business career, starting out at HM Treasury and leading to him running the commercial operations of the Economist Group across Asia Pacific and China, where based in Hong Kong his team won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2002. A strong advocate for individual human rights David was one of the co-founders of the Kaleidoscope Trust and a previous Chair and current Trustee of Sunrise Diversity – the charity celebrating diversity, challenging discrimination and changing attitudes in our rural communities. David was named an ALDE Rainbow Ambassador for his work promoting LGBT+ rights.

In 2023 David was elected Chair of the LibDem Federal International Relations Committee, where he has been heavily involved with defining the party’s foreign policy and developing relations with our liberal sister parties around the world – in particular across Europe, which will be critical in the coming years to help us fix our broken relationship with the EU.

Recently elected to represent Letchworth Garden City on North Hertfordshire District Council, David is a strong campaigner. Based until last year in North Devon, where he served for 7 years as a local councillor, Mayor of Northam and Chair of the Devon Association of local Councils, David understands the challenges facing our rural communities and wants to give the Fenlands the independent voice on the national stage, that it so richly deserves.
