Supporting and protecting trans people
We are fighting for equality for all LGBT+ people.
On 22nd July, the County Court issued an order in a longstanding case that the party decided not to defend as it related to a complaints system that was replaced in September 2019.
Liberal Democrats exist to build a free society where every person’s rights and liberties are protected. Everyone should be able to live their lives as who they are - free to pursue their dreams and fulfil their potential, safe in the knowledge that their fundamental rights will be protected.
This includes fighting for equality for all LGBT+ people.
Over the years, Liberal Democrats have played an important role in delivering progress for the LGBT+ community. From being the first party to openly oppose Section 28, to the tireless work of Lynne Featherstone and other Liberal Democrats in getting the Same Sex Marriage Act passed in 2013.
But sadly, the fight for equality goes on - particularly when it comes to trans rights.
Too often, trans people face discrimination and hostility. In recent years, we have witnessed a Conservative Government intent on dragging vulnerable people into their divisive culture wars, a shocking rise in hate crimes against trans people, and young people let down by inadequate health services.
We will not tolerate any prejudice or discrimination, either within our party or in wider society.
Liberal Democrats are committed to tackling these issues, wherever they exist. Transphobic behaviour – discrimination or harassment, hate speech or vilification, or other serious abuses of the right to freedom of expression – is a breach of our Members' Code of Conduct and we have a robust disciplinary system to deal with it. This is outlined in detail here.
Whether it’s campaigning for a comprehensive ban on conversion therapy, or pushing the Government to improve wait times for healthcare services, we will keep doing everything we can to support and protect trans people.
For anyone in need of mental health support, all Liberal Democrat party members have unlimited access to the Health Assured Support Helpline at 0800 028 0199 and a range of other resources such as a website and an app.
