Trump's automotive attack: Govt must retaliate and slap tariffs on Teslas
EMBARGO: IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Responding to Donald Trump's announcement of 25% tariffs on car imports to the US, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Daisy Cooper said:
"First steel, now cars. Rachel Reeves is deluded if she thinks she can turn things around by ignoring the elephant in the room. The Government must stop cowering in the corner, hoping that Trump will just be nice to us.
"The Government must urgently set out what steps they will take to protect the UK automotive industry. It's clear that the best way to negotiate with Trump is from a position of strength. The UK must immediately respond, including tariffs on Teslas to hit Trump's billionaire backer Musk.
"This also shows the need for the UK to forge a new customs union with our European partners, to safeguard our economy, boost growth and create opportunities for our small business exporters."
