AI summit: Missed opportunity to back British tech businesses

10 Feb 2025

EMBARGO: 00.01 10th February 2025

Commenting on the Prime Minister's decision not to go to the AI Summit in Paris, Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey said:

“It’s deeply disappointing that the Prime Minister isn’t in Paris leading from the front on AI today.

“The UK should be championing the type of safe, quality AI innovation that will help to grow our economy, while making sure everyone is protected from the risks and shares in the benefits. We can’t do that alone, but only by taking our seat at the table and working with other countries.

“Given the grip that wealthy tech barons like Elon Musk have over the Trump administration and the rapid rise of Chinese AI firms, I fear the direction this will take without the UK standing up for our fundamental British values of fairness and the rule of law.

“This should be a huge opportunity for the Government to back innovative British tech businesses and lead the charge for safety too. I cannot understand why the Prime Minister isn’t seizing it with both hands.”
