Car manufacturer summit: Govt needs to “Trump-proof” car industry with "new UK automotive strategy”

28 Mar 2025

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to officials meeting with representatives from the car industry after Trump has said he will put 25% tariffs on all car imports into the US, Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson Daisy Cooper MP said:

“Donald Trump’s economic illiteracy continues to astound. His nonsensical trade policy threatens to wreak havoc on the UK car industry and the world economy.

“The Government cannot afford to sit on its hands any longer. Ministers must immediately bring forward a new UK automotive strategy to Trump-proof the car industry starting by overhauling business rates and reintroducing the plug in car grant to boost British electric vehicle producers.

“There must also be immediate negotiations to form a bespoke UK-EU Customs Union to protect car manufacturers over the longer term from any other shocks to the sector.”
