Cooper: Unprecedented legislation must be used judiciously

12 Apr 2025

EMBARGO: IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Responding to the passing of the Steel Industry (Special Measures) Bill which aims to prevent the closure of British Steel's Scunthorpe plant, Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper MP said:

“With Putin’s barbaric war in Europe and Donald Trump’s disastrous tariffs causing economic chaos around the world, we have to rescue British steel production here at home and support the thousands of jobs that rely on it.

“The Government must show that they will use today’s unprecedented legislation judiciously, as part of a serious plan to get our steel industry back on track. The first step must be to stand strong with our allies against Trump’s steel tariffs, and negotiate new trade deals to boost our steel exports.

“For too long our steel industry was neglected under the previous Conservative government. Rather than gimmicks from Trump’s cheerleaders here in the UK, we need real change so that British steel production can thrive once again.”
