Energy Charter Treaty: Govt finally listens to Lib Dem calls after months of delay

22 Feb 2024

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to the news that the UK will withdraw from the Energy Charter Treaty, Liberal Democrat Climate and Energy spokesperson, Wera Hobhouse MP said:

"The Liberal Democrats have lead the campaign to push the government to leave this outdated treaty and I am grateful to Ministers for finally listening to our calls after months of delay.

"This is just a first step. We must urgently see the government bring forward proposals for a new Renewables Treaty which would drive innovation, cooperation and the greater adoption of renewable energy.

"This Conservative government has been far too weak on climate action. The have surrendered the UK's world leading role in building the industries of the future and made it harder for us to meet our clean energy goals.

"The government must stop rowing back on climate commitments and step up as a global leader on the green economy."
