Gaza: Ed Davey urges Sunak to call for temporary humanitarian ceasefire
EMBARGO: IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey has urged Rishi Sunak to call for an immediate pause in hostilities in the form of a temporary humanitarian ceasefire in the Middle East, to allow essential supplies into Gaza and provide an opportunity for the hostages to be released.
The Archbishop of Canterbury and UN Secretary General António Guterres have both called for a humanitarian ceasefire to realise the release of hostages by Hamas and for aid to reach civilians in Gaza.
Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey said:
“The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is horrifying. To prevent a catastrophe, it is essential that food, water and medicine can reach the people who need them – most of whom are women and children. It is also vital that the hostages are unconditionally released.
“Hamas’s evil attacks have claimed far too many innocent lives already. Israel unquestionably has the right to protect its citizens and target these brutal terrorists, in line with international law, and the world has a duty to prevent more needless civilian deaths.
“The UK should be leading international efforts to secure an immediate pause in hostilities in the form of a temporary humanitarian ceasefire, to allow for the hostages to be released and to get aid into Gaza.”
