Inflation Stats: Govt should announce rail fare freeze
EMBARGO: Immedidate Release
Liberal Democrats have called on the Government to freeze rail fares as today's inflation figures shows that RPI inflation was at 9% in July. This is the figure normally used to determine rail fare increases, meaning passengers could be faced with a huge hike in ticket costs next year. Responding to the latest inflation statistics, Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey MP said:
"Month after month, families and pensioners are being clobbered by inflation and the buck stops with Rishi Sunak. Now millions will also be stung by terrible rail fare hikes.
"Sunak and this out-of-touch Conservative Government have failed to protect people from the cost-of-living crisis and what's worse is that they just don't seem to care.
"We need real action to tackle the cost of living crisis. The Government must immediately announce a rail fare freeze, alongside extra support for all those bearing the brunt of the Conservatives' economic mismanagement.”
