Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire welcomed by Liberal Democrats

27 Nov 2024

EMBARGO: Immediate release

Responding to news that Israel and Hezbollah have agreed to a ceasefire, Liberal Democrat Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Calum Miller MP said:

"Liberal Democrats welcome the efforts of all parties to agree a ceasefire in Lebanon. We hope that this agreement ensures that all parties uphold UN Security Council Resolution 1701. After months of conflict, it’s important that hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians are able to return to their homes.

"The UK Government must do all it can to resolve the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon too, as well as provide the government of Lebanon with support.

"We hope this progress can also help to deliver an end to the broader conflict which has caused such misery to millions of innocent civilians across the region. That includes the West Bank, where we need a cessation of violence and decisive action against extremist settlers. In the face of threats of annexation of the Occupied Territories by extremist Cabinet ministers, the UK Government should also immediately recognise Palestine as a state.

"And we urgently need an immediate bilateral ceasefire in Gaza, to put an end to the humanitarian devastation there, get the hostages home and open the door to a two state solution and a lasting peace."
