19 Jun 2024

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

  • Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper has unveiled a poster van highlighting the £3,000 cost of Conservative chaos to people’s mortgages

  • The Liberal Democrats are in close second place in Jeremy Hunt’s Surrey constituency

  • Daisy Cooper urges voters not to let the Conservatives “bet the house again” and back the Liberal Democrats as the party best placed to unseat the Conservatives

Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper has urged voters to back the Liberal Democrats and not let the Conservatives “bet the house again” on mortgage prices.

The poster van lays bare the cost of the Conservatives’ mismanagement of people’s mortgages, highlighting the fact that the typical mortgage-holder who rolled onto a new deal in 2023 saw an annual hit of £3,000.

Daisy Cooper will address activists in Surrey with the van, before leading a campaign action day in Godalming and Ash. The Liberal Democrats are neck and neck with Jeremy Hunt in the seat, and are aiming for a ‘Portillo moment’ and victory on election night. Across the Blue Wall, voters are concerned about the rising cost of mortgages.

Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper said:

“The Conservatives have left our economy in tatters, sent mortgages spiralling and overseen the worst cost of living crisis in a generation - don’t let them bet the house again.

“This election is our chance to win the change our country desperately needs. For far too long, people across the UK have been let down and taken for granted by this out-of-touch Conservative Government.

“Families and pensioners are struggling with sky-high energy bills, food prices and mortgages – and the Conservatives have only added to the pain.

“They have plunged the NHS into crisis, failing to deliver the new hospitals they promised and making people wait hours for an ambulance, weeks to see a GP or months for urgent cancer treatment.

”It’s time for a change. These Conservatives have got to go - don’t let them bet the house again.  In so many parts of the country – we have shown that it is the Liberal Democrats who can get the Conservatives out.”

  2. According to the Bank of England, mortgage-holders who reached the end of their fixed-rate term in 2023 refinanced at much higher rates, which caused their annual interest payments to increase by around £3,000. Among those mortgages the median outstanding balance was around £130,000, with an average remaining term of around 20 years and a previous interest rate of around 2.0% on average.
