Mid Bedfordshire: Govt bows to Lib Dem pressure and moves writ for by-election

4 Sep 2023

EMBARGO: For Immediate Release

Responding to reports the government will move the writ today for the Mid Bedfordshire by-election, after the LiberalDemocrats threatened to move the writ themselves if ministers failed to, Liberal Democrat Chief Whip Wendy Chamberlain said:

“The Conservatives have left the people of Mid Bedfordshire without proper representation for over a year and it took the LiberalDemocrats to finally put an end to this carousel of chaos. Rishi Sunak wanted to delay another humiliating defeat for the Conservative Party for as long as possible and we forced his hand.

“It is time that constituents' issues are taken right to the heart of Parliament and that is what the Liberal Democrats and our fantastic candidate, Emma Holland-Lindsay, are promising. We are clearly the best placed to win, the bookmakers’ favourites and have the largest campaigning presence in the seat.

“After knocking on thousands of doors and delivering hundreds of thousands of leaflets, the message is clear. Conservative and Labour voters are turning to the Liberal Democrats because they know we are best placed to get the Conservatives out and bring positive change to Mid Bedfordshire."
