Mid Bedfordshire: Three Lib Dem by-election winners visit as party ramps up its campaigning

26 Jun 2023

EMBARGO: For Immediate Release

All three of the latest Lib Dem by-election winners are visiting Mid Bedfordshire today, as the party ramps up its campaigning in Nadine Dorries’ seat.

North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan, Tiverton and Honiton MP Richard Foord and Chesham and Amersham MP Sarah Green all campaigned today across the constituency, in a bid to repeat their stunning by-election wins in the past two years after overturning huge Conservative majorities.

The Liberal Democrats are the bookies’ favourite to win Mid Bedfordshire in what would be another historic by-election victory. Winning the seat would require a swing of 23.6%, less than the swings the Lib Dems achieved in Chesham and Amersham (25.2%), North Shropshire (34.2%) and Tiverton and Honiton (29.9%).

The Liberal Democrats announced local councillor and health campaigner Emma Holland-Lindsay as their candidate for the Mid Bedfordshire by-election this week.

Liberal Democrat MP for North Shropshire Helen Morgan commented:

“Just like in North Shropshire, rural communities here in Bedfordshire are fed up with being taken for granted by an absent MP and an out-of-touch Conservative government.

“Nadine Dorries has spent the past week defending Boris Johnson’s lies and lawbreaking instead of standing up for her own constituents.

“I’ve heard real anger on the doorsteps here from former lifelong Conservative voters who are switching to the Liberal Democrats in their droves. Families are drowning in soaring bills and finding it almost impossible to get a GP appointment, while the government is mired in sleaze and chaos.

“Emma Holland-Lindsay will be a fantastic local champion for the people of Mid Bedfordshire who will stand up for vital health services. It’s clear that all the momentum is with the Liberal Democrats in this campaign, and that we are best placed to beat the Conservatives and send Rishi Sunak a message.”
