PAC HMRC report: govt “has chosen to target small businesses and care providers” instead of cracking down on tax dodgers

12 Feb 2025

EMBARGO: 00.01 Wednesday 12th February

Responding to the Public Accounts Committee saying that the cost of tax dodging is likely to be far higher than the annual £5.5 billion estimated by HMRC, Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson Daisy Cooper MP said:

“The Labour government has chosen to target small businesses and care providers instead of closing these gaping enforcement gaps.

“For years the Conservative Party all but legalised tax dodging with their failure to invest in HMRC, and now our public services are paying the price.

“People should not be paying through the nose to pick up the tab for tax dodgers any longer. The government must invest in HMRC properly and bring an end to this disgraceful situation.”
