Rwanda Scheme: Another £50m of taxpayers money thrown at failing policy

19 Apr 2024

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to the news from the Public Accounts Committee hearing today that a further £50 million is set to be sent to the Rwandan government once the Rwanda Bill comes into force, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesperson Alistair Carmichael MP said:

"Why are the Conservatives intent on throwing even more money at a failing policy?

"It's clear that Conservative ministers are not bothered about delivering value for money when it comes to the Rwanda scheme. Instead, they are obsessed with pushing an immoral, unworkable white elephant of a policy, no matter the cost to the taxpayer.

"It's time that Rishi Sunak finally accepts reality and abandon the Rwanda scheme in full."
