Scrapping non-dom tax status: Sunak must recuse himself

29 Feb 2024

EMBARGO: For Immediate Release

The Liberal Democrats are calling on Rishi Sunak to recuse himself from any discussions within government regarding the scrapping of non-dom tax status, given his own family previously benefited from the scheme.

It comes after reports that the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt is considering scrapping the non dom tax status in next week’s Budget.

Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Sarah Olney MP said:

“Rishi Sunak must recuse himself from any discussions within government on the potential scrapping of non-dom tax status.

“He clearly has a potential conflict of interest given his household previously benefited from this scheme.

“It would be wrong if the decision on this key issue was in any way influenced by the Prime Minister’s own personal experience and interests.”
