Store closures: report should make clear to the Chancellor our high streets “simply cannot take any more financial pain”

20 Mar 2025

EMBARGO: 00.01 Thursday 20th March

Responding to a PwC report which found that 12,804 retail stores, leisure venues and service outlets closed in 2024, Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson Daisy Cooper MP said:

“These figures represent communities across the country losing much loved local businesses which are the heart and soul of our high streets.

“After years of Conservative economic vandalism, reports like this should make clear to the Chancellor that our high streets simply cannot take any more financial pain.

“That’s why it’s crucial for Rachel Reeves to U-turn at the Spring Statement and scrap her jobs tax which will only lead to thousands more much loved community businesses having to close their doors.”
