Sunak must make ethics adviser truly independent

22 Dec 2022

Responding to the appointment of a new ethics adviser by Rishi Sunak, Liberal Democrat Cabinet Office Spokesperson Christine Jardine MP said:

“Rishi Sunak promised to govern with integrity. But we have to judge him on his actions. To leave the vital ethics adviser post vacant for weeks was bad enough. Now we discover the new incumbent has to seek the PM’s permission to launch investigations. It’s utterly toothless.

“First on the new ethics adviser’s to-do list should be investigating Suella Braverman and Dominic Raab. It’s deeply worrying to think that Sunak - the man who reappointed them - has the power to block any investigation.

“Rishi Sunak must finally make the ethics adviser truly independent. If he has nothing to hide, he has nothing to fear.”
