Trump steel tariffs: Ed Davey calls for four nations summit to protect UK steel industry

10 Feb 2025

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey has called on the government to convene a four nations summit with leaders of devolved governments in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, to discuss plans to protect the UK steel industry from potential tariffs imposed by Donald Trump.

It comes after President Trump announced he will be imposing tariffs of 25% on all imports of steel and aluminium into the United States.

Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey said:

"Donald Trump’s latest threat of tariffs will plunge many into deep uncertainty - not least those working in our great British steel industry.

"Keir Starmer must immediately call a Four Nations summit with leaders across the United Kingdom, to agree a joint plan to protect our economy from Trump’s damaging trade war.

“The government cannot leave our steelworkers at the mercy of Trump’s tariffs, after years of being let down by the Conservative Party. We need to see coordinated action to protect jobs and livelihoods in communities across our country.”
