Trump tariffs: Davey urges Starmer to meet steel workers and set out plan to protect UK’s economic security

11 Feb 2025

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey has urged Keir Starmer to speak to the British steel industry “without delay” and meet workers, as Trump imposes tariffs on steel imports.

Davey has already called for a four-nations summit to be convened with the leaders of devolved governments to agree a plan to protect the domestic steel industry.

Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey said:

“We need to see much more urgency from Keir Starmer on protecting jobs in our steel industry from Donald Trump’s damaging tariffs.

“The Prime Minister should meet with British steel workers and listen to their concerns firsthand. They deserve to know how the government plans to protect them.

“At the very least, the government should be discussing a plan with international allies on how to limit the damage caused by Donald Trump’s trade war.”
