Charlotte Cane MP is looking for a Full Time Caseworker and an additional Part Time Caseworker to join her small team, based in the constituency office in Ely & East Cambridgeshire. Some home working may be considered, but you will be expected to be physically present in the office for the majority of your working hours.

You will be supporting Charlotte in handling constituents’ concerns on a wide variety of issues, such as immigration, health, education, housing and benefits. You will liaise with relevant organisations and local authorities to address constituents’ concerns. You will provide support in dealing with a high volume of standard queries from constituents regarding national issues.

You will also accompany Charlotte on surgeries, meetings and visits within the constituency to take relevant notes, actions and photographs.

Caseworkers handle individual casework brought to the MP by constituents. This includes initial assessment of the issue, identifying and procuring information, planning a strategy to assist them, and then communicating with the local and national agencies, officials and departments needed to address the situation. Some cases will be complex and require numerous actions across a span of time. The caseworkers need to manage this process accurately and sensitively. They have a large caseload to manage and need to keep on top of many different tasks.

Applicants should be well organised self-starters, with excellent written and spoken communication skills. You should have a genuine desire to help constituents in need and be able to reassure vulnerable constituents. The position would suit someone who enjoys problem solving, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Skills required:

  • Excellent research, communication and organisational skills.
  • Tenacious attitude with a commitment to getting the best outcome for every person.
  • Ability to learn and advise on complex casework issues.
  • Good knowledge of office based IT systems and administrative tasks.
  • Ability to work flexibly within a small team.
  • Meticulous eye for detail.
  • Ability to gain awareness of the activities of an MP's office, policy and law.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work within a sensitive and public facing role.
  • Sympathetic to Liberal Democrat values.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.

Closing Date: 30 July 2024
