Salary: In line with IPSA pay scale, 3 days per week.

Job Details

We're recruiting a Parliamentary Researcher to support his work in the Westminster office through research on policy matters and assistance with parliamentary duties. This role would suit someone with previous experience of working for an MP in another capacity, or someone with experience in another policy-related role.

The role will be mostly based in Westminster, however some assistance in the consitutency will be necessary, whether it be supporting Chris in events or supporting the team in casework relevant to you.

Initially a 12-month contract with a view of a permanent role. Planned to be 3 days a week, however these details are up for discussion.

Role description

  • Undertake research on relevant subjects as directed.
  • Analyse, evaluate, and interpret data to ensure Chris is accurately informed on key issues.
  • Develop and maintain current knowledge on relevant areas of parliamentary business including Motions, legislation, Hansard, debates etc.
  • To advise and ensure that Chris is fully briefed on potential questions and motions to be put to the House.
  • Give advice on policy issues.
  • Respond to correspondence and enquiries from constituents, the media, lobbyists, and pressure groups.
  • Prepare and present briefing notes for committees, press releases, parliamentary questions etc.
  • Management of Chris' diary in Westminster, liaising with the constituency office
  • Assist with policy-related casework as required.
  • Have working knowledge of relevant legislation and upcoming business including how they impact on the constituency
  • Maintain positive on-going relationships with all parties including members of the public, groups and suppliers.
  • Work with colleagues in communications/casework to identify potential impacts from the research work and disseminate them effectively.
  • Occasional work outside of normal working hours may be required.

Essential criteria:

  • Strong organisation and time management skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Commitment to the aims and values of the Lib Dems
  • A strong interest in politics and current affairs
  • High motivation, with the ability to take initiative
  • Sound political judgement

Desirable criteria:

  • An interest or background in Chris' main areas of policy interest
  • Ability to think strategically in furthering Chris' policy interests and goals

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
